Promoting British Values in our school

British Values at Hadfield Infant School.

At Hadfield Infant School, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

The Department for Education (DfE) reinforces the expectation that all schools must actively promote these values to help children become responsible, respectful and active citizens. These values were first set out in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and reiterated by the Government in 2014.

We promote these values through high-quality teaching, a broad programme of assemblies, and a positive behaviour policy. They are also woven through our Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development, character curriculum, behaviour curriculum, and our Relationships Health Education (RME) curriculum in Key Stage 1.

Together, these approaches provide opportunities for pupils to develop the skills, understanding and attitudes that will enable them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

Democracy.

At Hadfield Infant School, pupils are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions and understand that their voices matter. We listen to children's and parents' views through discussion, questionnaires and school events. Our School Council and Eco Council each have two representatives from every class, chosen through a democratic vote. These councils play a vital role in decision-making, including recent projects to enhance our playground and improve our school environment.

Rule of Law

We have recently introduced a restorative behaviour approach, where children are encouraged to think about the impact of their actions and how they can resolve situations positively. This helps them to develop empathy, accountability and problem-solving skills.

We teach the importance of rules and laws in keeping everyone safe and helping our school community run smoothly. Our three simple rules – Be ready, Be respectful and Be safe – underpin everything we do and reflect the expectations we hold for society as a whole.

Through this restorative approach, pupils learn that rules exist for good reasons, that actions have consequences, and that everyone has a responsibility to help maintain a happy, safe and fair environment for all.

Individual Liberty

We encourage all children to develop confidence, resilience and independence by making their own choices in a safe and supportive setting.

Pupils are supported to express opinions respectfully, persevere when faced with challenges, and understand that they have the freedom to make positive choices. Through discussions, reflections and E-safety lessons, children learn the importance of making safe and responsible decisions for themselves and others.

Mutual respect

Respect is at the core of our school ethos. We promote an inclusive culture where everyone is valued and treated with kindness and consideration. Pupils understand that their words and actions affect others, and they are encouraged to take responsibility for their behaviour.

Through open discussion, especially in lessons that explore 'big questions', we help children develop empathy, understanding and an appreciation of different viewpoints. We support pupils to form their own reasoned views about moral and ethical issues.

Tolerance of those of different Faiths and Beliefs

We celebrate diversity and promote understanding of the wide range of faiths, beliefs, and cultures that make up modern Britain.

Through our RE curriculum, assemblies, and community links, children have opportunities to explore and appreciate different traditions, customs and celebrations. Visits from faith and belief leaders, alongside themed events and learning experiences, help pupils to develop respect, acceptance and appreciation of others.

At Hadfield Infant School, we teach our children to understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity – ensuring that everyone feels valued and included.
