Curriculum

Intent

At Hadfield Infant School, our vision is to give every child the key to their education, enabling them to unlock the wider world. We nurture aspiration, perseverance and a strong sense of character so that all children develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive in learning and in life.

We create an environment where children feel valued, supported and inspired to reach their full potential through memorable, positive and purposeful experiences that build independence and essential life skills.

Our curriculum reflects this vision. It is broad, balanced and creative, with core content carefully mapped from EYFS through to year 2 to ensure knowledge and skills build progressively across all subjects. Oracy is interwoven throughout, giving children the tools to think critically, communicate effectively and express themselves with confidence.

We place a strong emphasis on enrichment opportunities, which are overtly planned throughout the school year to enhance children's learning, spark curiosity and provide powerful 'hooks' that help embed knowledge into long-term memory, reducing cognitive overload.

Language development is at the heart of our curriculum. We create a language-rich environment where children learn, apply and build upon key vocabulary and knowledge. We believe that reading opens the door to learning, and we aim to foster a lifelong love of books in our school. We use the Little Wandle phonics scheme, supported by decodable books, reading schemes and a diverse range of high-quality texts.

Implementation

Our curriculum balances the expectations of the National Curriculum with a wealth of creative, cultural and real-life experiences. It enables children to flourish academically, socially and emotionally, while developing curiosity, confidence and a love of learning.

Through careful curriculum mapping, core knowledge, vocabulary and skills are tracked and built upon from EYFS through to Year 2. This ensures smooth progression and allows children to make meaningful connections across subjects.

Oracy is embedded throughout our teaching, encouraging children to speak, listen, question and reflect – deepening their understanding and helping them to retain and apply knowledge effectively.

Enrichment is an integral part of our offer. Experiences such as forest school, local visits, workshops, visitors and themed curriculum days bring learning to life and provide meaningful opportunities to link new learning to existing knowledge.

Our classrooms are stimulating, language-rich environments that promote independence and curiosity. Teachers plan responsively, using targeted feedback and flexible groupings to ensure that every child makes progress from their individual starting points.

Parents play a vital role in supporting their child's learning, and we maintain strong home-school partnerships through regular communication and ClassDojo, our online platform for sharing learning and updates.

To the side, you will find our subject curriculum plans, which illustrate how topics and core content is revisited and built upon to create a cohesive, connected and inspiring learning journey for every child.
