We bid Mrs Poyzer a fond farewell |
| July 2009 |
|
 |
It was the end of an era at Hadfield Infant school last week as we said farewell to Mrs Poyzer, who had been a teacher here for 25 years.
Children, parents, friends, governors and colleagues all gathered to say a well-deserved 'Thank-you' and 'Farewell'. We wish Hilary all the best as she looks forward to retirement and becoming a grandmother!
Mrs Poyzer wanted to pass on a message to all concerned; "A GREAT big thank you to everyone for my assembly and for the wonderful gifts. I was completely overwhelmed by gifts and good wishes from parents past and present and wouldn't know how to thank them".

... and goodbye to Jill too! |
We also said a big 'Thank You' to Jill Mason, who has been helping out in school this year, most recently working in Miss Keem's class.
We hope to see you again soon Jill! |

Leavers Concert take us around the world |
July 2009
Our Year 2 pupils did everyone proud on Monday and Tuesday with their performance of the custom written play "The Magic Jigsaw". Jane Moore wrote this review for us: |
 |
The Year 2 Leavers concert was fantastic. A lovely story written by Jess Potts with a part for everyone. There were lots of lovely songs and dances performed beautifully by the children and plenty of funny moments. Everyone worked extremely hard and put on a brilliant performance. All the children were fabulous - learning lines, songs and dance routines - it really is hard to believe they are only 7 years old. It is a wonderful lasting memory to treasure of their wonderful time at Hadfield Infants both for the children and their parents. A credit to the school!
Many thanks to Jessica Potts, who wrote the play, Joanne Craven for the dance routines, Laura P., Lauren A., Laura, Emma, Jess, Nikki, Mandy and Susan for scenery and props, Ben and Marie for the sound and DVD, all the staff for their hard work, and most of all the children for putting on such a great performance.

It's a Knockout !
June 2009

|
The staff (plus PTA and governors) entered a team in Saturday's It's a Knockout competition. The sun shone all afternoon, which was a good thing as the events tended to be very wet.
Although we didn't win, we managed to come first in one event, with headteacher Mrs Taylor getting very wet in a wheelbarrow before getting out to win the race with a winning throw.
In the process, we raised some money for a charity that supports a rare condition that two Glossop sisters suffer with. If anyone didn't get a chance to sponsor one of the team, and if you enjoy seeing the staff looking silly in the videos below (and getting very wet, with the exception of Darren Moore - we'll get you next time Darren!), donations can still be made at the school office (please!)
Take a look at the videos below! (There are two formats - either click the images, or the link below the image). Thanks to Lindsay for taking this video rather than watching the kids! Stray children and a tricky spot meant that our winning race isn't very clear unfortunately - but you can still see Mrs Taylor's winning jig! |

Growing Together!
June 2009 |
The gardens of Hadfield Infant School have been transformed this year, with several projects improving all areas of the outdoor environment.
One scheme, Derbyshire County Council's 'Growing Together', has got us going with growing all sorts of vegetables. The scheme provided us with a new greenhouse, raised flowerbeds and fruit trees. |
 |
Teaching Assistant-cum-head gardener Mandy Vella has organised the children into teams of enthusiatic gardeners, planting tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, peas, onions, carrots, spring onions, sprouts and broccoli.
Mrs Vella said "I am so proud of the effort and enthusiasm of the children, they love to be involved. Let's hope we have a bumper crop and we can sell produce, or have some kind of celebration supper with the veg."
Thanks also to Louise Valentine of the Growing Together scheme, governor Sylvia Garratt who has also invested a lot of her free time in the new venture, and everyone who helped set the new facilities up.

Outdoor action days

Red Nose Day 2009: didn't we laugh!
March 2009 |

We had great fun at school on red nose day, and raised some money at the same time. We all had to wear something funny for money.

Developing Outdoors

Christmas Fair raises £605
December 4th 2008 |
 |
The Christmas Fair was a great success again, with the children enjoying face painting, hair braiding, Santa's Grotto and lots of teddies, games and tombolos!
Many thanks to PTA members, staff, Father Christmas himself, and all other helpers. We raised a total of £605, which considering some awful weather on the day was a great effort. |
Our Golden Cooks
We have been awarded Gold in the Derbyshire primary catering quality assurance award. The award recognises the quality of the food we serve, as well as presentation, customer care, hygiene and heath and safety.
Chief cook Ann Smith, who has been at the school for 22 years, said |
 |
Council staff come and assess each school kitchen and this award covers things like the quality of our menus - like today we are having spaghetti bolognese with salad and yoghurt, fresh fruit and carrot cake. We cook everything on the premises and serve two other schools - Padfield primary and Hadfield nursery.

Calling all butterflies
September 2008
Belated congratulations to Miss Keem's reception class from last year (now in Year 1). They were awarded first prize in a competition run by Glossop Rotary Club. The children, led by teaching assistants Mrs Smith and Mrs Vella, planted a 'butterfly garden' on the slope outside Miss Keem's classroom.
Encouraged by their success, Mrs Smith and Mrs Vella are now running an after-school gardening club, and the prize of £50 has been used for equipment to start this up. |

The place to be if you're a butterfly! |
Miss Keem said
The children were very enthusiastic and loved working with Mrs Smith and Mrs Vella to produce not only the winning butterfly garden but a vegetable garden too! We are so proud to have the best butterfly garden in Glossop, and hope to see the butterflies visiting us next year!

Farewell and Good Luck
22nd July 2008
Today we say 'Goodbye' to four members of staff. Our Deputy Headteacher Mrs Urquhart is retiring after spending 20 years here. We wish her all the best for the future.
Also leaving us are support staff Jo Towell, Lynn Finnerty, and Maggie Goley. However, our children will come across these three again at St. Andrews, where they will continue their invaluable work. |

A sports day at last: smiles all round!

22nd July 2008
After a couple of false-starts, the rain held off today to allow us to have a sports day. There was a change of format this year, with children competing in teams of about 10.
Congratulations to Mrs Bentley's team, who ran out winners. All of the children seemed to enjoy the morning. Well done to Mrs Taylor for her persistence and determination that the sports day should go ahead! |

Year 2 children leave us with a smile!
16th July 2008

Our year 2 leavers put on a hugely entertaining show on Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening. They performed Happily Ever After, a musical written especially for us by Jessica Potts.
We asked Jane McCaughey, parent of one of the stars of the show, for a summary of the evening:
This is the show where our children get a chance to show not only what they can learn in school but how their personalities have been nurtured and developed during their time in the school. All songs are new to the children as well as the dance routines, and it shows how skillful they are when such a high standard is delivered by children so young.
The show was hilarious, with the children matched perfectly to the roles they played. It reached out to all generations and I am sure will be remembered fondly for many years to come.
Congratulations to all of the children, and special thanks to the following people (I hope we haven't missed anyone! ):
- Jessica Potts for writing the play
- Joanne Craven for the fantastic dance routines
- Emma, Jess and Sam for scenery, props and make-up
- Ben for the sound effects and producing the DVD
- Marie for filming for the DVD
- Mrs Neill, Miss Thorpe, Jo Towell and Mrs Foley for putting it all together and hours of practice!

We all go to Longdendale Environmental Education Centre!
June 2008
This week every class had a trip to Longdendale Environmental Education Centre. Children spent the whole school day there doing a range of activities, including pond-dipping and mini-beast hunting!
The centre is based in a beautiful spot near Bottoms reservoir, and the children made full-use of the environment, doing tasks that encouraged them to use all of their senses.
Many thanks to Sarah, Chris and Matt for looking after us and giving all the children a great day.

New Ofsted inspection says we are 'good' in every respect!
Congratulations to all staff and pupils on the outcome of the recent Ofsted inspection. The report gave us an overall 'Good' grade, and also found the school to be good in every sub-category.
The inspectors report that:
This is a very caring school, which looks after pupils from all groups well and in which they feel safe and happy. They are positive about the school and clearly enjoy their lessons.
|
 |
We asked headteacher, Chris Taylor, if she was pleased with the Ofsted report. She replied
"The school went through a rigorous two day inspection which involved all aspects of school life being inspected, from leadership and management, teaching and learning, and care and personal well being of the children.
The judgement of the inspection was "good" in all areas of school life. We are delighted with the outcome and feel that this reflects a true picture of the standards of care and achievement we have attained"
Alice in Hadfield; Theatre company comes to school
1st May 2008
We were lucky enough to be visited by the Harl-e-quin Children's Theatre Company, who came into school and performed Alice in Wonderland. Harl-e-quin are from Littleborough.
|
 |
We asked Year 2 pupil Liam about the show. He said
"It was good. Some people went up with the actors. Some of them played croquet, the ball was a pretend hedgehog, and the stick was a flamingo!"

New sound system installed in school
April 2008
A new sound system has been installed in the main hall at school, with the help of money raised by the PTA. The system allows the use of a hand-held microphone, as well as a small radio mic.
We are already benefiting from the new system in Friday morning family assemblies, and future performances at the school will come over loud and clear! |

Having fun, staying fit, and raising money!
14th March 2008
Hadfield Infants children took part in Sports Relief, raising money for children in the UK and abroad.
| Year 2 teacher Helen Thorpe said "For sports relief we had an afternoon of exercise and fun! We set up a circuit of different activities which were - hockey, football, skipping, bean bag target game, zedbugs and the big climbing frame. The children had five minutes on each station then they raced to their next challenge! It was great fun and the children especially enjoyed the zedbugs and the climbing frame! We raised £243.65" |

Christmas Fair raises £1,850 !
December 2007
The Christmas fair this year raised £850, which has been increased by £1000 by generous contributions from the Royal Bank of Scotland and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

The money will be spent by contributing to a new sound system for the school hall, and also a shed for storing outdoor toys. The PTA also buy the books that the children receive at Christmas and books for the Year 2 leavers in July.
Congratulations to all PTA members, staff, parents, children and extended family on such a grand total.
Alan Charles presents award to a healthy school!
7th December 2007
Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire County Council's cabinet member for school planning and support, presented the school with a Health Promoting Schools award.
The Health Promoting School status recognises that health issues are an important and on-going part of the curriculum at our school.
Stroganoff's Circus Cafe brightens the school!
September 2007
A new mural has brightened up the school hall, and also helps to promote healthy eating.
The mural, of 'Stroganoff's Circus Cafe', is the work of Linda and John Irving. The characters are based on a health-promoting session run by Derbyshire County Council. Linda, who is an artist and also a parent governor at the school, volunteered to |
 |
| produce the mural when the subject of healthy eating arose at a governor's meeting. |
When asked what kind of reaction they had had to the artwork, John said
" I have to say favourable. It certainly had an impact at the start of the school year and I've been stopped in the street by children who recognise me as 'the man who painted the circus'! "
We asked John for more details of the process of producing the mural, and how long that took:
" The characters came to us from the ladies at Derbyshire County Council, but Linda designed the layout. Everything was hand drawn and painted. Linda drew all the characters on the ground floor and in-filled most of them. I did all the high level stuff and outlined 95% of the ground floor. We had some help in initially painting the walls and outlining one of the Chinese characters. It all helped to meet the deadline. We worked two weekends and I did some at night during the week. All told it was 67½ man hours. "
